Here is almost an hour of wood turning condensed into 20 seconds. This was done at the NCSU Craft Center Wood Shop, and is a rough turning, meaning that this green, or fresh, piece of wood was turned into a basic shape that will be wrapped in newspaper and/or buried in wood shavings for a month or two for slow, controlled drying. It will then be turned into its final form, sanded, then finished with walnut oil and beeswax.
MY LATHE
I turn my pieces on a NOVA GALAXI DVR LATHE which I got in November of 2017. I actually wanted the previous years model that was a bit smaller due to space restraints, but no complaints. I chose this lathe for several reasons, the direct drive is very smooth; no pulleys or belts to vibrate. The motor control allows full torque at low speeds and the head swivels 360 degrees so it can accommodate large pieces of wood.
How does one receive a 436 pound lathe? Very Carefully! It arrives in a crate delivered by semi.

It has to be uncrated and carefully assembled
,I was a challenge getting it out of the crate, and putting it together requiring a variety of tools, some of them rather large. Not only did I have 24mm wrench, I actually knew where is was!
I did need some help getting the main body up on the workmate to I could attach the cast iron legs.
It went together very well, then the fun part of moving it into position.
